Where one shop stocks a different variety, its price is greyed, the variety is named beside it, and it is left out of the average. A dash means we don’t currently track that vegetable at that store. IGA has the fewest stores in our sample, so it shows the most gaps. Averages use whatever stores we have for each vegetable. Where only one shop stocks it, the row says “only Woolworths” rather than calling one price an average.

Sold by the item, not by weight

A lettuce, a bunch of silverbeet, half a rockmelon. The shops price these by the item and print no per-kilo figure at all, so there is no honest $/kg for us to put in the table above. Here is what they cost instead, exactly as the shelf label reads. We do not convert these to a price per kilo, because that would mean guessing a weight nobody published and you would never be able to check it.

Where shops sell different sizes, the average uses whichever size most of them stock, and the unit is named. Quarters are not averaged with whole ones. Same for varieties: where one shop stocks a wombok and the others stock a green cabbage, the odd one out is named and left out of the average. Where that leaves one shop, the row says so rather than calling it an average.

How to read this page

The trend column shows whether each vegetable is rising, falling, or stable in price over the past month. ▲ red means the price has jumped and you might want to grow your own; ▼ green means a glut at the supermarket and it’s probably cheaper to buy.

The sparkline (the small line next to each price) shows the shape of the tracked history at a glance. A downward slope means prices are dropping; a sharp rise means a seasonal spike. Hover the sparkline on desktop for month-by-month numbers. For the proper chart, the 3-month trend is free with an account and the full tracked history is on Starter.

The per-retailer columns tell you which shop has the best current price. Sometimes Aldi is $5 cheaper. Sometimes Woolworths has something Coles doesn’t carry.

How accurate is it?

Honestly: about as accurate as the publicly listed prices on the retailers’ own websites. Sometimes a product is mis-categorised (a 100g basil pack gets read as “basil” with a per-kg price that looks crazy because the unit is wrong). We filter the worst outliers. If you spot something that looks wrong, email support@gardenbuddy.au, we will fix the mapping.

Australian vegetable prices: common questions

Where do these vegetable prices come from?

The price list is compiled daily from the publicly listed prices at Woolworths, Coles, Aldi and IGA. We show a per kg figure for each vegetable so you can compare like for like, even when one shop sells by the bunch and another by weight. Updated every day at noon AEST.

Which supermarket has the cheapest vegetables?

It changes week to week and item by item. Aldi is often the cheapest on staples, but not always. Coles and Woolworths run rotating specials, and IGA carries lines the big two skip. That is the whole point of a side-by-side price list: on any given day one shop is a few dollars per kg cheaper, and the table shows you which one.

What does “per kg” mean on the price list?

Per kg is the price for one kilogram, worked back from whatever pack or unit the shop actually sells. A 250g punnet at $4 is $16 per kg. Converting everything to a per kg price is the only honest way to compare an Aldi eggplant against a Coles one, so every row on this page is normalised that way.

How often is the vegetables price list updated?

Daily, at noon AEST. The trend column and the sparkline show you the direction over the past month, so you can tell a real seasonal spike from a one-off. If a vegetable has jumped, that is usually the week to grow your own instead of paying for it.

Why are some Australian vegetable prices so high right now?

Weather, mostly. Floods, frost and heat hit a growing region, supply drops, and the price per kg climbs within a week or two. The price list flags the biggest movers so you see it coming. When a vegetable is cheap at the supermarket it is usually a glut, which is the worst time to plant it and the best time to just buy it.
