What I’m Seeing on the Shelf
This week’s Brisbane shelf prices spread wider than I’d expect for the same vegetable on the same day:

IGA at $6.33 against Coles at $11.76 is an 85.8% gap. Same cucumber, near enough double the price depending on which door I walk through. The numbers are Brisbane sourced, but the direction of a move like this usually runs national, so if you’re in Perth or Hobart the trend’s worth a look even if your exact shelf price differs. If I were buying this week, I’d start at the IGA aisle and not assume the big two are cheaper.
Growing My Own Instead
A drop like this is the market telling me supply is up, which is also the season telling me when to plant. Cucumber wants warmth, so the two zones I’d flag run opposite calendars. If you’re subtropical, like me up here near Dayboro, you’ve missed the main winter window but a polytunnel or a warm north-facing wall will carry an early spring sowing. Cool temperate growers down in Melbourne or Tassie are firmly out of season now. I’d wait for October or November, start seed indoors on a heat mat, and harden off once frost risk has passed.
