Horse Manure for the Vegetable Garden: The Complete Guide

Horse manure is a free, reliable soil builder for home gardens, but only if you get it right. This guide covers the complete lifecycle, from collecting to timing, plus the two critical risks most gardeners miss.

    One horse produces about 23kg of manure a day. That’s roughly 8 tonnes a year, and I had a trailer load of it sitting in my paddock this week, straw and all, straight off the float. Free fertiliser is one of the best deals going in a home garden, but horse manure is also one of the most misunderstood amendments out there. Get it wrong and you can stunt a whole season of tomatoes without ever knowing why. Get it right and you’re growing on some of the cheapest, most reliable soil builder there is.

    This is the full lifecycle. Collecting it, cooking it, and putting it on the garden, plus the two ways it can go badly wrong that most guides skip.

    What’s actually in the pile

    Horse manure sits at a carbon to nitrogen ratio of about 24 to 1, higher than cattle manure at 19 to 1 and well above chicken manure at 9 to 1. That’s the reason it’s called a cool manure. Nutrient content is modest, roughly 0.7% nitrogen, 0.3% phosphorus and 0.6% potassium on a dry weight basis, compared to chicken manure’s 3.8% nitrogen. It won’t burn plants the way fresh poultry manure can, and it breaks down fast because it’s light and fibrous rather than dense.

    Two things change that ratio a lot, and I’ve been caught out by both: bedding and diet. A horse fed on hay and turned out on pasture produces manure that composts easily. Add a wheelbarrow of wood shavings or sawdust bedding to every load of droppings and you push the carbon ratio up hard, because wood is close to 300 to 1 carbon to nitrogen. That high carbon bedding will tie up nitrogen in your soil as it breaks down, robbing it from whatever you’ve just planted, until the microbes doing the breaking down have consumed enough of it and started releasing nitrogen back. Straw bedding is friendlier, closer to the manure’s own ratio and quicker to compost through. I always check before I take a load, and if you can ask your source what the horse is bedded on, I’d do the same.

    Fresh versus composted, and why the difference matters

    I treat fresh horse manure as carrying three real risks. It can contain E. coli, Salmonella and other pathogens that survive on soil and can transfer to a crop that touches the ground. It’s full of viable weed seeds, because horses digest less thoroughly than cattle and a lot of what goes in the front end comes out the back still able to germinate. And if it’s heavy with wood shavings, it will lock up nitrogen in your bed rather than feed it.

    Composting solves all three, but only if the pile actually gets hot. A working compost pile needs to hold 55 to 60°C for at least three days in a pile that isn’t turned, or through 15 days in a windrow that gets turned at least five times, to reliably kill pathogens and the great majority of weed seeds. At 60°C most common weed seeds are dead within an hour, though a few tough customers like black nightshade can take up to three hours at that temperature. A pile that never gets hot, just sitting in a heap losing moisture, is not doing this job. It’s just aging, not cooking.

    For food safety on crops that touch the soil, the rule I stick to (borrowed from the US organic standard, since it’s the most rigorous published guidance I could find) is 120 days between applying raw manure and harvesting anything where the edible part contacts the ground, like carrots, lettuce or strawberries, and 90 days for crops like staked tomatoes or trellised beans where the edible part stays clear of the soil. Properly hot composted manure that’s been through the temperature and turning schedule above resets that clock. You don’t need the 90 to 120 day wait if the pathogen risk has already been cooked out.

    Collecting it

    I ask about bedding type and diet before I take a load, for the nitrogen tie up reason above and one more, covered next. A source that turns horses out on clean pasture and beds on straw gives you a better starting pile than one bedding on shavings with a lot of uneaten hard feed mixed through.

    I keep my pile away from waterways and off any slope that drains toward a dam or creek. Fresh manure leaches nitrogen and can carry pathogens into water before it’s had a chance to break down, and on a block like mine with a dam downhill, that’s a real problem, not just a council box to tick.

    The herbicide problem nobody warns you about

    This is the one that catches experienced gardeners out, not beginners. Aminopyralid, clopyralid and picloram are broadleaf herbicides sold in Australia under names like Grazon, Tordon and Lontrel, widely used on pasture, hay paddocks and even some cereal and canola crops. They bind tightly to plant tissue and pass straight through a horse’s gut into the manure, essentially unchanged. Composting does not reliably break them down. Field reports put the persistence anywhere from 30 days at the fast end to three or four years in a pile that never got hot enough or wet enough to encourage the right microbial breakdown. Concentrations as low as one part per billion can still damage sensitive plants.

    The plants most likely to show it are the ones in the legume, nightshade and daisy families, so peas, beans, tomatoes, potatoes, capsicums and lettuce. Damage shows as cupped, twisted new growth and a stunted, almost fern like growing tip, and it’s easy to mistake for a virus or a spray drift accident from somewhere else entirely.

    There’s no visible way to tell if a load is contaminated. The only real test is a bioassay. Fill a couple of pots with the manure or finished compost, mixed with regular potting mix, and sow bean or pea seeds. Grow a clean control pot alongside using ordinary potting mix. If the seedlings in the manure pot come up twisted, cupped or stunted next to a normal looking control, don’t use that batch on anything you plan to eat. Give it a full season, or longer, turning it regularly, and test again before it goes anywhere near a food bed. I run this test on every new source before it touches my veggie beds, not just the first time.

    Turning it into something you can plant into

    For a hot pile, you want roughly one part high nitrogen material (the fresh manure) to two or three parts high carbon material like straw or dry leaves if the bedding ratio was light, though a well bedded pile is often close to right on its own. Build it at least a cubic metre so it holds heat, water it to the moisture of a wrung out sponge, and turn it every week or two to keep oxygen getting in and to move the cooler outside material into the hot centre.

    If you don’t want to manage a hot pile, a simple aged heap left alone for six to twelve months will still break down the coarse structure and reduce the weed seed load, though it won’t hit the pathogen kill temperatures a managed pile does, and it does nothing for herbicide persistence either way. Slower, but far less fiddly, and fine for ornamental beds or fruit trees where the food safety clock doesn’t apply the same way.

    You’ll know it’s ready when it’s dark, crumbly, smells like soil rather than ammonia or manure, and you can no longer pick out individual straw pieces or droppings.

    Applying it to the garden

    I work finished compost into the top 10 to 15cm of soil at somewhere around a wheelbarrow load, roughly 50 to 60 litres, per square metre for a hungry bed, less for a light annual top up. I apply in autumn or winter, well ahead of spring planting, so it has time to finish integrating into the soil biology before roots need to use it.

    If you’re applying fresh or only partly composted manure, that’s where the 90 and 120 day rule from earlier comes in. Dig it in, don’t leave it sitting on the surface, and count from the application date to your planned harvest date before you sow anything with edible parts near the soil.

    What loves it and what doesn’t

    Heavy feeders do well on composted horse manure. That’s brassicas like cabbage, broccoli and kale, pumpkin and other cucurbits, corn, and leafy greens once the manure is properly composted rather than fresh. Fruiting crops like tomatoes, capsicums and cucumbers don’t get much benefit from it and are among the most herbicide sensitive plants going, so I’d rather feed those beds with a targeted fertiliser and save the manure for the brassicas and pumpkins.

    Root crops are the clearest no. Carrots, parsnips and radish fork and split when they hit a pocket of undigested organic matter or a burst of nitrogen, because the root shoots off sideways chasing the richest patch instead of growing straight down. Keep manure, fresh or composted, out of any bed going into carrots that season. Onions and garlic also do better in lean, well drained soil and don’t want the extra fertility. Peas and beans are nitrogen fixers themselves and don’t need the feed, though light composted manure won’t harm them, aside from the herbicide risk noted above, which hits legumes hardest of all.

    How often

    Once a year, worked into a bed ahead of a hungry crop, is plenty for most home gardens. I’ve found manure builds organic matter and structure over time as much as it feeds a single season, so there’s no need to load every bed every year. I rotate it through the brassica and pumpkin beds on whatever crop rotation I’m already running, and give the carrot and onion beds a season off from it entirely.

    The bottom line

    A cubic metre of composted horse manure, done properly, replaces a decent stack of bagged compost that would otherwise run you $8 to $15 a bag at the garden centre, for the cost of a trailer trip and a few months of patience. The two things that actually matter are getting the pile hot enough to kill weed seeds and pathogens, and running a bean pot test before you trust a new source near anything you plan to eat. Skip either step and you’re not saving money, you’re just moving the problem into next season’s tomatoes. The only actually hard part is unloading the trailer before the flies find it.
